About
We built the search we needed, then gave it away.
Duct is made by Tensflare, a company that builds trust infrastructure for consequential AI. Our job is to make AI outputs safe to act on. Duct applies the same idea to finding things: every answer shows exactly where it came from.
Where Duct came from
While building Docfide, our contract platform, we kept losing time to our own documents: the signed version of an agreement, the page of a judgment we had relied on, the policy someone wrote last year. They were spread across drives, inboxes and laptops, and the search tools we tried either missed scanned files or wanted our documents in someone else’s cloud.
So we built Duct: fast, private, able to read almost any file including scans, and honest about where every result comes from. It worked so well for us that we released it as open source, and made it a product of its own.
What we believe
Verification over trust
Any tool that tells you something should show you where it came from. Duct names the file and page for every result and opens it there, so you can check it in seconds.
Open infrastructure
Tools we build for ourselves are shared under permissive licences. The Duct app is Apache 2.0: you can read, run and change all of it, including exactly what it sends. The team server features are source-available under the Elastic License 2.0, so you can read and run those too.
Eat our own cooking
We run Tensflare on the same open-source Duct you download. If something doesn’t work, we feel it first.
Interoperability first
Open formats and standards over lock-in: an OpenAPI spec, plain exports to Word and CSV, and an index you keep on your own disk.
Private by design
Your documents stay on your computer or your own servers. The little data we do handle, for accounts and optional usage counts, is listed field by field.
Built for where we are
Duct works offline, reads scanned paper, and keeps data in the customer’s own country: the things that matter most to the teams we started with.
